fumbling his confidence,
and wondering why the world has passed him by.
hoping that he's bid for more than arguments,
and failed attempts to fly.

description, Alex is one of those individuals that you shrink away from on first glance. His height alone would be enough to intimidate someone, but the fact that he is broad shouldered and reasonably muscular sort of wards people away. It would, at least, if he didn't stoop so much and didn't have such an amiable grin. With a balanced and well set face, he's quite an attractive young man which he's been known to use to his advantage. His expressions don't differ that much, as he's usually grinning in his typical and unique childishly alluring way, but it seems he has a rather pliable face as he is very good at impersonations of his friends and relatives. His complexion is pale, and mercifully unblemished and it pretty much stayed that way through all of his adolescence, for which he's very grateful. If there is one thing he's sort...conscious of, it's his hair. He doesn't do anything to it, God forbid, and lets it fall wherever it falls and do whatever it feels like, but he doesn't really like it being cut...or touched. He reckons that this stems from a childhood phobia from having his hair ruffled too many times.
clothing, Alex isn't what anyone could call vain, persay...but he does like to take care of the way he looks. His clothes are often neat and uncrumpled, if that's the look he's going for at least. His typical attire is black or dark blue jeans, a light plain coloured vest, with a black button down shirt over top that's open either part of all the way. He finds that his appearance and well-kept physique is one of his best traits all round, and therefore likes to emphasise it on occasion, by wearing fitted or ribbed jumpers or forgoing the vest entirely. He also has a reasonably good sense for formal occasions, and had nailed the style of smart-casual impeccably by the time he reached 16.
i am the mess you chose.
good traits, If you make Alex your friend, you need never make a friend ever again. He's relentlessly loyal and kind and gentle to match. Loving doesn't cut it, he's positively in love with everyone. He has a particular soft spot for his family and oldest friends, but he'll treat most people in the same way, even if he barely knows them.
The sense of humour is something else. Even in times of crisis, Alex can crack a grin and will attempt to lighten the mood. His humour style swings depending on his audience, and he can be very adult and sarcastic at times, and at others stupid little word plays and spontaneous songs tend to work.
Growing up in such a large family, and as the second oldest, he's learned that being selfless is one of the best thing he can be. He'd give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Also, from his upbringing, he's acquired the skill to be very good with kids as the age gap between him and his siblings is quite big.
Confident and bold, shyness has never been an issue for Alex. He could never at all understand why some kids in his class dreaded public speaking when he could just lounge around by the podium and talk to 60 odd people like he was talking to a friend and still get top marks. He has no problem making an idiot out of himself and he honest to God doesn't care what other people think. He's completely comfortable in his own skin.
There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity and Alex has one foot planted firmly on either side. He loves adrenalin and seeks it actively in any way that he can, and this can sometimes put him in danger. His bravery is something that means he overlooks this on a regular basis.
bad traits, Alex is sort of hypocritical in nature. Much as his gentle side is very prominent and he's warm-hearted and soft natured most of the time, his loyalty to other people makes it such that he avenges his loved ones in a serious and often violent way. Alex doesn't believe in non-violent negotiation, so if you've hurt one of his friends or his family in however small a way, you're likely to get punched in the face. He's been known to act rashly and react in an almost exaggerated way at times for other small things as well.
Another negative aspect of his personality is his immaturity. This goes down well with small kids and often with teenagers as well who look at him and come to the conclusion that they don't have to grow up after all, but other adults don't really appreciate his outlandish and loud comments and boundless energy. He's also still stuck with the 'it doesn't matter, i'm invincible' mentality that most people grow out of in their teens.
From talking to him, you wouldn't know it, but Alex has a really short fuse. His temper is very volatile and if you say the right thing he'll blow up at you, and he has no concept of when enough is enough and he's gone too far. This can make being around him quite a risk for certain aggravating people.
Another aspect that ties in to his temper, is his capability of holding grudges. If you offend him, hurt him or any of his loved ones, he does not forget. Ever.
His attention span is very short and he gets distracted easily. Heard the expression 'like flashing a shiny object at a child'? That's what Alex is like, except the object doesn't have to be shiny. He's a bit of a womaniser (commitment issues), so the source of his distraction is usually wearing a skirt.
habits, Much as he's self-conscious about other people touching his hair, he still does it himself. He's also fiddling with it, brushing it back off his forehead or running his finger through it.
When he's nervous, he'll often reach a hand up to brush an imaginary strand of hair off his forehead without realising he's even doing it.
He clicks his fingers and every joint that he can. In fact, he often does this accidentally. He's got a very clicky bone structure, and just walking bare foot across a floor means that his feet and ankles bones will click together. Some people find this disturbing.
Alex is, much to his enjoyment, a hit with the opposite gender and sometimes takes this for granted, believing that he can do whatever he wants. He tends to use women, and due to his serious issues with commitment, has yet to find one that he keeps around for more than 24 hours.
Despising silence, Alex has a deep rooted childhood habit of putting his index finger in the side of his mouth and pulling sideways to make popping sounds, which often results in a fit of giggling from him and other people of a similar maturity.
He has a slight counting problem, and counts his steps when he walks, and his breaths when he's not doing anything important, and sometimes when he is. He gets quite upset if someone interrupts his counting.

place of birth, London
date of birth, December 7th
history, Alex was born to teenage parents in your average hospital in London. He was his mother's first child, and his father's second, the first of four biological siblings and the first son. He grew up in quite an unstable home, as his parents were quite often at each others throats and he couldn't tell you how many times he heard the words 'Get your things Lex, we're going to stay with Uncle Charlie until your father stops being a prick'. Despite this, the environment was a loving one on the whole, and there was always enough of everything to go round and he considers himself very lucky.
When he was seven years old, his father left home. He didn't think this as particularly odd, until the days started to turn to weeks and he realised that maybe there was a slight possibility that his father would not be coming home. The next few months were rough for Alex, and he found himself torn between the brief flares of hope that he would be coming back, and the deep resentment that him and his mother and step-sister had been walked out on in the first place. Things only got worse when his mother announced that she was pregnant again, and worse still when another man started to hang around the house. He spent this time in a very bitter way and became introverted for a spell...but when his little sister was born he couldn't help but turn back to his old self again. Alex has always doted on his younger sister excessively.
Things worked out a little better after that, and his father did come home when Alex was nine. It took around nine or ten years to work out the rift between them, but it's better now.
His life sort of leveled out again. He didn't do so well at school with the academic side of things, but he excelled in drama and even more so in gym and athletics. He has a lot of stamina and is good at things like that.
When he was fourteen, his youngest siblings, twins James and Janie were born, and his step-sister moved out of the house to create more space and because she wanted to move in with her boyfriend.
When he was sixteen, he got his first girlfriend, a childhood friend by the name of Erin. Much as it almost pains him to admit it, she's the longest running girlfriend that he's ever had.
Things started to get a little bit messed up again when he was eighteen. The parts of London that Alex tended to frequent in his wilder days were exactly that, wild. For instance, by the time he was fifteen he'd been mugged twice, but he didn't really pay much heed because he stopped being victim once he grew tall and broad enough to look intimidating. Erin, however, was not so lucky, and fell victim to a random act of violence. After this and she decided she'd sustained enough injury, her and her mother moved away.
Alex was thoroughly depressed by this, and how futile his life seemed at this point. He'd not done very well in his exams so his options were limited, and he was feeling quite pessimistic about his future. Which was when he discovered what he could do.
He doesn't really like to talk about how he worked it out, and if you ask him how he found out he could phase right through solid objects he's likely to tell you it was trial and error.
It's not exactly a great point of conversation to mention he worked out he was a 'superhero' by jumping off a building. But that's what he did, and he phased right through the concrete of the street below and ended up on the floor of an underground train station.
Since then, it's been a lot of trial and error to work out exactly what he can do and when he can do it. He has a lot of control over his power lately, and rarely runs into walls only to find he wasn't concentrating hard enough and just bounce right back again like he used to. However sometimes if he gets too upset or frustrated and goes to punch something, his fist will slide right through, or if he's pushing himself too hard and has run himself too far again, his state will start to flicker and he'll sink a couple of inches into the ground.
When he first discovered what he could do, he was amazed to the say the least, and the first thing he did was return home to tell his mum that he'd just sunk straight through the street.
In fact, she was worryingly calm about this, as was his father. It turned out that being a genetic mutant ran in the family, although he didn't believe this until they'd both demonstrated profusely what they could do.
This revelation is mostly what sealed the rift between him and his father, as Alex found it very therapeutic to be able to hurt him in various ways to reinforce the whole cellular regeneration trick - or at least, that's what he decided fixed things anyway.
The next few months saw Alex's life getting back on track. He still has a dead end job, little career prospects, and not many close friends besides his siblings, but it was all exciting because he found out he could do something extraordinary and that carried him through.
His step-sister, who took after her biological mother and was therefore unlike the rest of the family, was always fun to mess with about his phasing, as he could suddenly appear in rooms next to her and give her a heart attack. They also repeatedly tried their new favourite game, where he would phase right through her.
His parents put a stop to this pretty quickly, telling him he needed to stop messing around as the gift was quite unstable and he couldn't be entirely sure what he was doing was safe as no one really knew.
This worried him briefly, but he thought little more of it and mainly continued doing what he was before.
That was until, people found out about it.
Alex still blames himself for this, even if it wasn't his fault, because he was spotted casually phasing through a building and into an alley to give himself a new shortcut. It could have been coincidence, or it could have been his fault, but later that week there were government officials in his home and his whole family was being shipped off to a village in the middle of nowhere.
He doesn't really like being hemmed in, but he's pretty happy in Chesil Valley. Not much in his life has changed, except it's definitely not London and he doesn't get to see his step-sister anymore as she's still on the outside world.
He still has a dead end job, his best friends are still his siblings, and his options are still limited. Now he's just one hero in amongst dozens of others, which does have it's merits from the 'this is really ridiculously cool' view point.
